Quick answer: Refrigerators most often leak because of a clogged defrost drain, a cracked or misplaced drain pan, a loose or cracked water supply line, a failing water inlet valve, a leaking filter housing, or a fridge that isn’t tilted slightly backward. Water inside under the crisper drawers almost always means a blocked defrost drain. Water on the floor at the back usually comes from the water line or valve.

The defrost drain: the number one cause

Several times a day, your refrigerator melts the frost off its evaporator coil. That water runs down a small drain tube to a pan under the fridge, where it evaporates. When food debris, mold or ice blocks the drain, the water backs up and spills into the fresh-food section or freezes into a sheet on the freezer floor. Clearing the drain with warm water and a turkey baster often fixes it; if the drain keeps freezing, the defrost heater or a drain heater may be failing.

Water line and inlet valve leaks

Refrigerators with ice makers or dispensers have a water supply line and an inlet valve at the back. Plastic lines crack with age, compression fittings loosen, and valves scale up or split, especially in hard-water areas. A slow leak here can damage flooring and subfloor before you notice it. If you find water at the back of the fridge, turn off the supply valve and call for a repair.

What you can check right now

  1. Unplug the fridge and turn off the water supply valve if water is on the floor.
  2. Look under the crisper drawers for standing water and check the drain hole at the back of the fresh-food section.
  3. Pull the fridge out and look at the water line, the inlet valve and the drain pan.
  4. Make sure the filter is the correct one and fully seated.
  5. Check that the fridge tilts slightly backward so the doors close on their own. Most manuals recommend raising the front leveling legs a little.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my refrigerator leaking water inside?

Water inside the fridge, usually under the crisper drawers, almost always comes from a clogged or frozen defrost drain. Defrost meltwater can’t reach the drain pan, so it overflows into the cabinet.

Why is my fridge leaking water on the floor?

Floor leaks usually come from a cracked water supply line, a loose fitting, a failing water inlet valve, an overflowing or cracked drain pan, or a fridge that tilts forward. Turn off the water supply and check the back of the unit.

Can a water filter cause a refrigerator leak?

Yes. A filter that isn’t fully seated, the wrong filter model or a cracked filter housing can leak, usually inside the fresh-food section or under the fridge.

Is a leaking refrigerator dangerous?

The main risk is water damage to flooring and cabinets, plus a slip hazard. If water is near electrical outlets or the fridge’s wiring, unplug it and keep the area dry until it’s repaired.

Why is my refrigerator water dispenser not working or dripping?

A failing water inlet valve, a frozen line in the door, a clogged filter or worn dispenser parts are the usual causes. Replace the filter first; if it still drips or won’t dispense, the valve or door line needs service.
