Quick answer: A freezer that isn’t freezing usually has a defrost system failure (heavy frost on the back panel), a failed evaporator fan, dirty condenser coils, a worn door gasket, or a compressor problem. Freezers should hold 0°F. If yours is above 10°F after you’ve cleaned the coils and checked the door seal, call a technician before food starts to thaw.

Freezer not freezing: the usual suspects

  • Defrost system failure. Frost-free freezers melt frost off the evaporator coil several times a day using a heater, a defrost thermostat and a timer or control board. When one of those fails, frost builds until it chokes the airflow. A back panel coated in white frost or ice is the classic sign.
  • Evaporator fan motor. This fan pushes cold air across the coil and around the freezer. If it stops, the freezer warms up even though the compressor is running. A squealing or ticking noise that gets louder when you open the door often comes from this fan.
  • Dirty condenser coils or a failed condenser fan. The system can’t shed heat, so it can’t pull the freezer down to 0°F.
  • Door gasket leaks. A torn or flattened seal lets in warm, humid air. You’ll often see frost near the door and on the top of packages.
  • Overpacking. Food pressed against the vents blocks airflow. Leave space around the air outlets.
  • Compressor or sealed-system problem. If the compressor clicks on and off without running, or runs constantly with little cooling, see compressor repair.

Reading the frost pattern

Frost tells a technician a lot. An even layer of heavy frost across the back panel usually means the defrost system isn’t running. Frost only at the top or near the door points to a gasket or door alignment problem. A patchy pattern, with frost on part of the coil and none on the rest, can indicate a low refrigerant charge — a sealed-system repair that needs a certified technician.

Quick checks before you call

  1. Set the freezer to its recommended setting (usually 0°F or the middle-to-cold position) and wait 24 hours.
  2. Clean the condenser coils and make sure the condenser fan spins when the compressor runs.
  3. Check the door gasket for tears and make sure nothing is stopping the door from closing.
  4. Move food away from the air vents.
  5. If the coil is completely iced over, a 24-hour manual defrost (unplugged, door open, towels down) will restore cooling temporarily while you arrange a repair.

Chest and upright freezers

Standalone chest and upright freezers work differently from refrigerator freezers. Many chest freezers are manual-defrost and have no fan, so the common failures are the thermostat, the start relay, the compressor and slow refrigerant leaks. Upright frost-free freezers share most of the same parts as a refrigerator’s freezer. Technicians in our network can look at both.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my freezer not freezing but the fridge is cold?

Most often the defrost system has failed and frost is blocking the evaporator coil, or the evaporator fan has stopped. A worn door gasket can also let warm air into the freezer only.

What temperature should my freezer be?

The FDA recommends 0°F or below. Use an appliance thermometer to check, since built-in displays are not always accurate.

How long will food last in a freezer that stopped working?

A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours if the door stays closed, and a half-full freezer about 24 hours, according to FDA guidance. Food that still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can be refrozen.

Why is there so much frost in my freezer?

Heavy frost on the back panel usually means the defrost system has failed. Frost near the door or on food packages usually means warm air is getting in through a worn gasket or a door that doesn’t close fully.

Is it worth repairing a freezer?

Defrost, fan and gasket repairs typically cost a few hundred dollars and are usually worth it. A compressor failure on an older or inexpensive freezer often makes replacement the better choice.
