Quick answer: The most common Samsung refrigerator repairs are ice makers that freeze up or stop producing ice, fresh-food sections that stop cooling because the evaporator coil ices over, fan noise, water dispenser problems and control or display faults. Before calling, make sure the fridge isn’t in “cooling off” mode (the display shows OF OF) and replace the water filter if it’s more than six months old.

About Samsung refrigerators

Samsung is one of the best-selling refrigerator brands in the US, and its French-door and four-door models are packed with features: in-door or in-compartment ice makers, twin cooling systems on some models, Wi-Fi controls and FlexZone drawers. More features mean more parts that can fail, and “Samsung ice maker not working” is one of the most searched refrigerator problems in the country.

Common Samsung refrigerator problems

  • Ice maker freezing up or not making ice. On many French-door models the ice maker sits in the fresh-food section, where humid air can leak into the compartment and freeze. Ice jams the auger or chute and production stops. See ice maker repair.
  • Fridge not cooling, freezer fine. Frost can build up on the evaporator coil behind the panel and block airflow to the fresh-food side. A technician checks the defrost heater, sensors and fan. See refrigerator not cooling.
  • Fan noise. A buzzing or rattling fan, often an evaporator fan hitting ice, that gets louder when the door opens.
  • Water dispenser not working. Frozen door lines, a clogged filter or a failing inlet valve.
  • Display or control faults. Error codes, flashing lights or a fridge that won’t respond.
  • Water under the crisper drawers. Usually a frozen or clogged defrost drain. See leaking water.

Quick checks before you call

  1. Look at the display. If it shows “OF OF,” the fridge is in cooling-off or demo mode; your owner’s manual explains how to turn it off.
  2. Replace the water filter if it’s older than six months.
  3. Check that nothing is blocking the vents in the fresh-food section.
  4. Clean the condenser coils and make sure the fan runs.
  5. Write down the model number and any error code shown on the display.

Samsung repair or replace?

Most Samsung repairs — ice makers, fans, sensors, defrost parts and control boards — cost a few hundred dollars, which is usually worth it on a fridge under about 10 years old. If the compressor or sealed system fails out of warranty on an older unit, replacement is often the better value. Samsung has offered extended coverage on some compressor parts, so check your warranty with your model and serial number first.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Samsung refrigerator not cooling?

Common causes are frost on the evaporator coil from a defrost problem, a failed evaporator fan, dirty condenser coils or the fridge being in cooling-off mode (OF OF on the display). Check the display and coils first, then call a technician.

Why is my Samsung ice maker not working?

On many French-door models, humid air gets into the ice maker compartment and freezes, jamming the mechanism. Clogged water filters, frozen fill tubes and failing inlet valves are also common.

How do I reset my Samsung refrigerator?

Unplugging the fridge for about five minutes resets the control board. Some models also have a reset or forced-defrost procedure in the owner’s manual. If the problem returns, a part needs repair.

Is it worth repairing a Samsung refrigerator?

Usually, if it’s under about 10 years old and the problem isn’t a sealed-system failure out of warranty. Most Samsung repairs cost a few hundred dollars.
